Thanks Pete, one random question, are the seat coolers in the 460 the peltier type that actually cool or are they like the 430 and just have fans that don't really do much..??

Cheers

The seats have a fan and a filter. They do actually cool so perhaps a peltier effect system but I'm not 100% sure

Well thanks for all your informative posts on LS460......boy oh boy am I lucky to have a problem free '95 LS400 LPG convert, sounds like the LS400's were the least problematic lexus ever made & the only ones worth having.

Cheers, the ones in the 430 didn't seem to get cool, they just blew air at you that couldn't get through the seat because you were sitting on it...!!!

Undoubtedly the 400 was the best made, they even had a forged crank which was dropped for the 430, Lexus bought a dozen S class Mercs, took them totally apart and designed the 400 to be better wherever they could... but alas, nothing lasts, rumour has it that they didn't make much money on the 400 so when they decided to update it and build other models the accountants got involved and quality suffers... They are still streets ahead of the competition though...

I'm on a Range Rover forum and a guy on there who can't even check the oil himself uses the dealer for absolutely everything, he spent £35,000 (no that's not a mistype thirty five thousand) over three years of repairs and servicing....!!!

While I agree that the 400 was/is wonderfully engineered, it is now an old design. It is now 20 years since I got my first LS and, at the time, I thought it was way ahead of other contemporary cars. However, time marches on, and I wanted something more modern - and with lots of up-do-date goodies.

Since the advent of the 400, cars have become very clever. Even a basic Ford Escort is packed full of electronics (although how long they'll last is open to conjecture). I wanted a modern LS so, in 2012, I bought the 460.

There are a lot of people on here who swear blind by their 400s and will never change. I respect that.........but, please, you have to respect that some of us want to move on.

Modern cars (even the LS) with all their complexity, may go wrong. I bought my 460 knowing this - and accept it could be costlier than my 400.

Happy New Year :)

Since you requested us to talk you out, can you please advise regarding your budget and mileage? Remember that the LS460 mpg can be surprisingly low as the engine is quite thirsty.

The is absolutely no reason why anyone should talk you out of a LS460, it is obviously a upgrade car for you and a nice one at that, lots of talk from other on your post about the  LS400, ive had a couple of 400s (over 10years ownership) and loved them but upgraded to a LS600hl which apart from the hybrid side is basically a 460 although mines the long wheel base with every bell and whistle supplied by lexus ie relaxation package but as i said just a 460 on steroids lol, it s a lovely car and far far superior to the ageing 400s, every car on the market will have its niggles over time.... so in my opinion i say go get the 460

ps the 460/600 isn't the right car for anyone worrying about mpg, coz you dont get much lol,

My view too.

Life is a one way journey. There are no return options, so

(a) if you can afford it

(b) you want it,

(c) you do not upset anyone by getting it, then,

go for it....and do let us all know how you get on.

Totally agree, I like all the bells and whistles more than a perceived drop in longevity....

It will be the cheapest one I can find, I run a Range Rover L322 at present that does well if it gets into double figures MPG...

Nobody was going to talk me out of it, I just wanted to know what problems people were having with them, lots of false information on the web about how unreliable modern Lexus are... personally I couldn't see it but knew that asking here would reveal the truth... it seems to be that they are issues with the suspension around 100,000 miles with airbags but my argument would be that they are a service item anyway, even coil springs fail at around that mileage...

I won't be put off, the only thing that could throw a spanner in the works is if I don't get what I think the Rangie is worth...!!!

In which case I may look at a GS450h, but that's another story...!!!

There used to be someone on this site who would check out 400's (at least), I think he was an ex lexus mechanic (not to sure though) for those who were going to look at one, it would be helpfull for anyone thinking of buying any of the top range oldies if there were a competant person to asses a potential buy.

Hi all... long time no post...!!!

Had an LS430 10 years ago now and had to sell it due to health issues, broke my back some years ago and a general deterioration in various bits of me meant it wasn't comfortable getting in or out... I'm 6'5" so even the size of the LS was a struggle...

Move forward several years and two of these

bb_zpsio7zciuv.png

Which as well as all these

Back_zps5kpmripd.jpg

And one of these

s_zps8f9dmkea.png

Has meant that I am now more mobile than I have been for a long time....

I've been driving people carriers and off road vehicles for the last few years as they were easier to get in but I now fancy a big saloon again and hanker after another LS..

The 460's have dropped in price and I could afford the oldest, highest mileage ones going, not fussed on the miles and don't need or want any of the bells and whistles associated with buying from a dealer as I do all my own service/repairs so the cheapest car going is what I am after...

So, anyone with a leggy LS460, I would be interested to hear what goes wrong or wears out to use as a bargaining tool....

Is there a shortcut with the 460 to this menu...?

LS430 diagnostic menu

And does anyone know if there is a workshop manual online or available anywhere else for the 460...?

Also any other comments etc would be great..

Thanks...

Don't do it, because you will be so spoiled by having a 460 you will never want another car

Ah, but I never get attached to cars, they are just a lump of metal, and I always get bored and want something different after a while.....

Glad to hear you like yours though, they do seem rather nice....
