I agree that I prefer engine bays without covers.  Can't get rid of them though since people expect them these days when it comes to selling the car.

Another purpose could b that keep dirt and muck,water from getting into electrics,  u might as well remove bottom covers too but they serve better purpose then top ones as I'm sure there for a purpose.

How do you think the millions of cars survived before manufacturers started putting covers on engines? My opinion is it's just bull****, an old army saying was, "bull**** baffles brains"

U could b right but  they were basic engines without electrics where cars nowadays too much electrics and lot more complex got to protect from water and dirt. all my mercs I owned from 1996-2002 had bottom and top covers but were easy to remove. maybe just to make it look nice cosmetically. iav had ford fiesta, escort which had no space for covers due to carburettors . cars now got fuel injection systems got more room to install covers.

When it comes to IS250... have you actually seen the engine without coves? It carries name of "snake pit"... I believe originated from US when they tried to tune first IS250's and enhance the engine bays with chrome tubes and coloured hoses and realised there is no easy way of doing it.

So first of all it is cosmetic purpose.. this engine woudl be hard to keep clean and details, so it is better when it is covered. As for covers underneath... the saerve many purposes as mentioned, including smoothing the bottom of the car for better aerodynamics, protection etc.

MOT Testers don't seem to like them much.

MoT testers aren't allowed to remove them, or anything else.

Yeah.. and why should they. I said If I gone see anyone putting such comment I am going to hit them with the cover until they understand those covers are where they are for a reason... 

It kind of surprises me... what they want to imply with that advisory.. should I take the covers of before taking it for MOT.

My mot is due in February probably remove covers so that won't give chance for advisory on mot as hate that when they put advisory just for covers  they expect us to remove them prior to mot

That is by design, so I won't allow some MOT technician challenge Lexus R&D... If I get advisory they can be sure I use some of the below information:

They can not give you an advisory for covers. Thats why super cars are road tested as nothing is seen on most of them.

On buses at work covers are removed for obvious reasons. Also a couple of rear panals are also removed, Exhaust side.

On the lexus the covers are mainly at the front, Brake pipes and most of the exhaust,suspension is all seen. As john says they cant remove them.

Then use a different Mot station. Cars are built with them nowadays to protect them from the elements. As people have said lots of electricals on modern

cars. What was the advisories for? Modern cars are galvernised so wings rarely rust, mirrors on extenslon sticks are for checking what the eyes can

not see. Last 3 cars i have owned have had covers, as would 90% of modern cars so how can they give advisories.

It's really just a comment that some things can't be, so haven't been, checked - eg the tops of the shock absorber towers.

Hi , as johnatg says , stating a cover stops things being seen and checked is just a comment ,In my opinion it is there as a get out clause should any problem arise within a short time of the MOT and you appeal that it was part of the test ,the tester can fall back on this statement because he could not check it . I have not had it on the Lexus but I have with other cars ,also where plastic covers are originally fitted over sills and they say they cant check for corrosion.

Why?....I'm happy with the one I use, advisories, no matter how trivial don't bother me.

Are you sure? I've jet wash many engines and never had any problems.

I always pop the 4 covers off the car when I take it in for MOT.

I like the tester chap...he's a good egg ...and he told me they are not allowed to remove them. 

Only takes a couple of minutes ..no biggee really

If I took them off I don't think they'd get put back on.

My garage already has inner wing arches, parcel shelves and other assorted bits that got took off cars and never put back on.
