Tyre Rotation?

Just wondering ...

Does anyone here rotate their tyres.

My fronts are slightly more worn than my rears. And with Winter coming...

Rotating tyres to even out the wear is ok (as long as they are not directional or staggered set-up) but one should always have the better tread depth on the rears. So in your case I'd leave as is.

Better still invest is a set of winter wheels and tyres?

I passed my driving test in June 1975 so that's more than 40 years ago and in all that time I've never bothered with 'winter' tyres. Does the need really exist in the UK?

Not strictly true.

Most tyre fitters and companies don't recommend rotating tyres any longer. The reason behind it is that 4 tyres (2 brand new and 2 part worn) are always going to be better than 4 tyres which are both part worn.

That's why I said it was ok, not that it was recommended. 

 

It is still mentioned in owner's handbook and if one is of a mind to get the greatest mileage from a set...

 

Personally I feel rotating tyres exposes tyres to an initial greater wear rate as tread experiences different forces.

I passed mine the year before you and I would agree, up until perhaps 10yrs ago. Seems tyres have become far more season specific in recent years? Certainly I remember driving in some quite heavy snow on 'normal' tyres back in the day without too much trouble (a couple of bags of sand in the boot, maybe! :) ) but now even with the slightest touch of frost progress can be iffy.. Perhaps the compounds now used are less tolerant to lower temperatures?

I think it is related to the lower rolling resistance of fuel saving tyres these days, which didn't really exist 10-15years ago...

Back to the original posters topic, I'll be rotating my tyres at the weekend as it appears the inner shoulders of the front tyres can wear unduly without rotating to the rears - I'll measure the tread depth across the tyre and post up the results although will probably only be valid for RX300 SE-L owners!

Hmm my RX300 always wore evenly and I never rotated the tyres. Are the alignment specs right?

Lol, still haven't done it yet. Just got my MR2 back on the road after a 6 month hiatus and got it through it's MoT (spark plugs and new alternator was required where I hadn't been driving it for ages as I love the RX too much!)

Once it's done I'll post an update!

I'm reading that front and rears should not differ by more than 2mm...

Does that influence it at all i wonder?
