Hi all

Are the cabin air filters washable?not not, what's the best place for a replacement?

Posted

Hi Duncan,  Never washed the Cabin filter in my car. Not designed for that, but, cheap as chips, EuroCar Parts, eBay & Carparts4less to name a few.  Be very careful regarding removal/installation, good YouTube vids to watch first !!

As said above. Not expensive to get ... can be as little as £6-9

There is guide here that I put up a few months back. As mentioned above you must switch the a/c to recirculate. In fact whilst you have the rear glovebox cover off, and can see the housing and filter, press the recirculate button on and off and you will see the lid lift up to reveal the filter. The lid/cover must be in the 'up' position ... on no account should you try and force up the lid with your hand.

I wonder how often people replace the cabin air filter in their Lexus ?

I looked at the filter in my Yaris the other day and it was filthy, mostly

with chopped up leaves. It's only about 18 months old.

My Lexus is 7 yrs old and I dont know if the filter has ever been looked at,

it certainly hasn't in the last three years. I don't expect it's part of a service

schedule. ?

Well it's listed as replace on major services on both my RC and RX

Yes, every 2 years/20k miles on all models in the service book. Lexus UK seem to change that to every year when they published their simplified service schedule that the dealers should follow:

Lexus - Service Table 0418.pdf

Certainly worth taking it out every 12 months and giving it a hover if you don't replace it.

So, we do not really need to be concerned about changing filter?

I'd change every 2 years, cleaning it at 12 months, or sooner if you get smells from the climate system.

If you get the more expensive ones with active charcoal in it to remove odours then that isn't going to be effective after 2 years so definitely should be replaced.

No smell from A/C and do not know if filter has ever been changed when car was serviced. If they have changed it it probably would be with Lexus/Toyota filter and that is not with active charcoal? So it would be better to buy aftermarket high quality filter than having the original even if changed when car was serviced (last week)?

I change the cabin filter myself once a year, instructing my dealer not to do it at service time because (a) it is a simple operation I can do myself whenever I think it necessary, and (b) the active charcoal type sold by MANN-FILTER, which is a specialist German manufacturer of filters, is at least half the price of the Toyota/Lexus one and is not detectably different in physical quality and performance.  I usually inspect the filter if there have been unusual amounts of seasonal pollen, and after any long periods of rain or, especially, wet fog, when the filter can get quite damp or even soggy.  I must admit I find the throwing out of a dirty filter to be rather pleasurable.

And me.

DIY job once a year. Then I know it HAS been done.

I buy on eBay, the charcoal ones if possible...

Thanks for replies. I've never bothered to check to see if the filter is replaced when serviced, (I'm on a service contract) ,

but it looks like it is.  I might take it out for a look anyway.

You probably won't get smells from damp leaves and dirt caught in the filter in your climate. Being clogged with dust is more likely.

I can confirm that mine was replaced at my last major service. Probably worth marking the existing one and checking it gets changed at major service time, as it's included in the cost of the service.

Smells from A/C come from bacterial growth on the condenser. If you get them you need to set off an aircon 'bomb' to sterilise the system.

Yes that is the main cause, but it can come from the pollen filter if it gets damp. The use of the word A/C was used as a general term for the heating and ventilation system rather than specifically the air conditioning part of the system.

Just got a mail from eBay:

Dear Customer,
I'm really sorry for contacting you but we have been informed from our charge that we can not ship this item through the postal network to your location. Therefore the order has been cancelled.
We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Kind regards
Katerina

Seems I live too far away from UK postal service so I cannot get the filter just paid for.

PayPal will refund; they are trustworthy.

Plenty of alternatives and most do ship from UK. Just do an ebay search.

eBay global shipping program send global except to places they do not send. All tax-free areas, all former tax-free areas, all areas that are IVA, Mehrwertsteuer, VAT free areas.

That is what eBay call global.

Searched and bought this:

Now let us see if having more luck with this.
