Hi

In the process of buying my first lexus-rx400 reg 56 and am getting paranoid about the cars history and future reliability. This is because I have just moved on after 3 years of Volvo ownership that cost me a mint after being lied to.

Does anyone know

rx400 lc56wxn ? grey metallic with cream leather.

1 owner and service stamps from lexus Twickenham and lexus edgeware road.

have placed deposit on car and getting last minute wobbles

any help is much appreciated

thanks in advance

I get the wobbles every time I buy another car - it is natural. Your chances of getting a real LEMON are small compared to other premium makes. You might find one or two issues as you are buying a 10 year old car. Having said that, have just taken my 18 year old (car not wife!) for a wonderful drive around Kent. I would be happy to drive to Spain tomorrow in the old girl! Expect little and you wil get a lot!

Hi. Rx is pretty bulletproof. Go for full service history as you have and you'll be fine... Great car. None better.. Has it had the inverter recall?

Hi Stuart, welcome. You are not alone, much as I love trawling Autotrader etc, the thought of actually buying a new car is quite fraught.

The RX is a complicated car, and Lexus bits are expensive, but with a full (?) dealer history you should be reassured it will probably be as reliable a ten year old car as you can buy. Are you buying from a main dealer, or a trader? It would be worth having in your hand a Hybrid Health Check from a Lexus dealer, I'd say.

Buying older cars (as I do), I would always recommend to someone not to commit every penny they have to buying the car, but instead to keep a significant chunk back for possible repairs.

Let us know how you get on; I guess being a Saturday you well be in the process of picking it up right now!

Update

Checked with main dealers that serviced car that all is as it states in book including cambelt and water pump at 70k. no outstanding recalls so imagine that means done. Last service at 81k done dec2015 mileage now 83k I will only do about 4000 ish miles per year and have spoken to nearest lexus dealer (leics) who have discussed warranty and service plan but this is where I have done the long winded calculation. Even though the car done 83k the next scheduled service in the book is 100k and not covered in service plan costing best part of £700!. Me thinks I will put £995 warranty in bank with the same service fees and just go for hybrid health check that gives 1 yr hybrid warranty cost under £60.

My trusted independent garage have been giving good advice and informed me about very recent law change regarding dealers selling second hand cars and the recourse allowed within 1 year.

Does anyone think this sounds sensible I wonder?

I know its second hand and 10 years old so will expect maintenance /repair costs just don't want to get mugged any more
