My 2001 GS300 has the original SS exhaust system which is still intact. The problem is the flanges on the joint between  the ctr. pipe and the rear pipe, they must be steel as they are corroding away. Does anybody know if these flanges are welded to the pipe or loose as I wondered if they could be cut or ground away and the joint held together with a "U" section clamp bracket to sandwich the flared ends of the pipes together.

Any advice would be great.

I don't think they would weld stainless steel to mild steel, so they are probably loose. Stainless and mild steel can be welded but I wouldn't trust the joint. Having said that I worked in the Aerospace industry, not the Automotive Industry and standards are different for obvious reasons.

Many thanks for that AmbroseJohn. It would certainly make it easier to remove what is left of the mild steal flanges if they are not welded on.

Has anybody else remade the joint between the two pipes without having to replace the whole exhaust system?
