Have you examined the offending part? Surely it needs looking at before you do any price searching.

Loose connection, bad connection, needs lubrication, water ingress......et al.

Normally the gas struts get weak - it sometimes happens on my 2003 RX and usually only in hot weather. Replacements can be found outside of the dealer network and are bolt off & on to swap over. If they are anything like the bonnet struts they cost quite a bit from Lexus!

Definitely weak gas struts [136000 mile RX] Rear door gets opened a lot on the key.

Found replacements from SGS at £94-75 inc tax postage etc.

They arrive tomorrow

Struts  good call guys.

Replaced them on wife's old Vectra, the boot is unbelievably heavy, you'll been a stout piece of wood to hold it up. Be careful.

Got my struts today - damn they are not the same as the ones fitted to my RX 400h.  Mine are Jap made and do NOT have

any way of removing the struts leaving the ball joint exposed. Mine have to be removed via the support metalwork.FullSizeRender.jpg

AS they are Jap struts with no western numerals  I assume they were fitted at the factory.  Other 400h's

I have looked at have the springy removable struts.  Must have been a supply thing.

Now I have to return unused struts and wait for the replacements.............. yawn.....

At least it's warm......  :yahoo:

It gets worse.  SGS Engineering tell me I have to saw the old gas strut cap area to release the ball>  Be careful not to cut into the ball they said!!!

I should have taken it to Guildford Lexus mechanics.......

More haste less speed..... :wallbash:

I've got a 2005 RX300 and also need tailgate struts but couldn't find them at SGS. However, I saw this while looking on their website:

A single Lexus RX300 1999-2003 SUV tailgate/boot gas strut manufactured in the UK with a 2 year warranty and new end fixings. Includes free printed & video mounting instructions. The struts on this particular vehicle are attached to the car using a bracket arrangement which is unique to the vehicle. It is only available from the vehicle manufacturer and is a part we cannot replicate. However we can transfer the brackets from your original struts onto a new set of struts. We would remove the brackets, refurbish them and paint treat them before attaching them to a new set of fixings. To do this we require are the original struts sending in to us. Because the gas struts would then be with us we could also inspect them (free of charge) for our re-gassing service.

So I took both struts off and sent them to SGS for them to transfer the brackets. My new struts, complete with my existing brackets attached, should arrive on Tuesday :yahoo:
