tyres what a bargain i have

Recommended Posts

after my service last week at lexus they told me i needed my tracking adjusting on the rear as my tyres had worn on the inner edges

so 2 tyres and a 4 wheel alignment would be £299

a kwikfit centre near my works is having a relaunch on the 11th as its had a refurbishment and if i get there between 7am - 8am

i will get 50% off your bill so i am buying 4 michelin cross climate tyres & taking advantage of a geometry offer where i can have the

geometry checked & adjusted 8 times in a 2 year period for £295.00,this branches alignment is one of the better systems its called

hunter hawkeye.here is a link for a video of the system

The inner wear is normal - no alignment is going to sort that out

Its the result of negative camber on the rear which is actually quite prominent.

Oh, and the negative camber is not adjustable!

if this wear is normal you'd of thought lexus would know this ,

inform me of the tyre wear and tell me its normal but they didn't,i seem to be being mislead

i suppose its like the washer additive ,i asked where it was ,they said in the washer bottle

and told them it couldn't of been as i brimmed it just before they collected it

maybe i need to take what they say with a pinch of salt.

this is the video they sent me

Normal wear & tear. My (ex) Fsport did 30k and the tyres looked much like yours.

My previous car was 13 years old and it drove straight & the tyres always wore evenly. Every time I purchased new tyres they offered to "check the tracking  sir" every time I declined. It never required it.

I must admit you are a braver man than me to trust anything on your Lexus to Kwik Fit:ohmy:

with regards to tracking i have never had an issue with them so i dont have any

reason not to go to them,i must say i watch anyone who works on my car like a hawk

and i always stay with it until the job is complete,if i see something i dont like i'll

be the first one to open my mouth and let them know.

when i bought my car last year lexus stoke should of checked the alignment before collection

and they didn't ,i took it to kwikfit who done a free check and they confrimed the alignment hadn't

been completed so back to lexus stoke to have it put right and their machine came back with the same results.

so again i know the hawkeye is an accurate machine.

Wear to the rear tyres of the 300h is a serious issue.   I was forced to discard the OEM Bridgestone Turanzas after 38000km because of wear to the inner treads of the 235/35-18 rears and, judging by its severity, would have needed to do so much earlier had I noticed it.  In the event, the wear was first discovered in the course of routine servicing and explained by my dealer (after checking with Lexus HQ     technical people) as the "regrettable but normal" result of the camber, an opinion subsequently confirmed by an independent tyre specialist.  Given this situation, I was worried when recently switching to summers from my 245/45-18 (all four) Yokohama Blizzak winters but was glad to see that, at 26000km, they had worn perfectly evenly front and rear, probably by virtue of having been rotated with each of two    seasonal changes, and look to have at least one more winter ahead of them.

Anyway, given that the rear camber is a problem with no solution, my advice would be to check the rear treads with ever-increasing frequency as the tyres age, maybe even as often as every 2000km after 20000km.

The point is, its not a serious issue.

Its the design of the car - negative camber means you will ALWAYS get inner tyre wear on the rears. Any car with negative camber will do this, not just Lexus.

A few cars which do it - BMW X5, X6, E90 3 series, 4 series...... the list goes on and on.

"Serious" in the sense that I would have preferred a car with a potentially longer tyre life and less of a need to constantly monitor it.   Not "serious" in the sense that even if I had been aware of the issue, my fondness for the car and original decision to buy it would have been unaffected.

At 30,000 miles (48,000 KM) the Bridgestones on my Fsport were still serviceable, the inner edge was worn but not much. To get 30k miles from rear tyres on a rear wheel drive car is pretty good imho. Even 38K KM is 24k miles so still not terrible.

How do you find the cross climates? When my summers and winters need changing I was thinking of trying them. Had normal all seasons before and they were terrible in the wet, and not great in summer.

Which 'all seasons' did you have?

I agree that 38000km is acceptable for a rwd car.  It is approximately the distance at which, as a general rule, I would have been starting to think, unhurriedly, about getting new tyres for any car I have ever owned.  On this occasion, however, the wear to both rears was dramatic, with small patches of exposed metal within what looked like burst blisters and the innermost tread pattern worn smooth.  It being inconceivable that this amount of wear occurred suddenly, I was left wondering just how long I had been driving with unsafe tyres and why it had happened.  Sure, I was aware of the pronounced camber, though I did not consider it particularly out of the ordinary.  My first thought was that, not ever having had different-sized rear tyres before, I had not had the four rotated as I had always done in the past when changing to summers every Spring.  Another thought was that the Bridgestones  (I have never been a fan of this brand from the standpoint of durability) were a poor-quality product, and, indeed, there is no way I would want them again.  But, then again, it is probably unfair to so utterly condemn them within the premium UHP segment.  I asked myself if they had perhaps been over-inflated, but, since I regularly check my pressures, I doubted it.  Had my driving style become more aggressive?   I didn't think so insofar as I had hitherto been congratulating myself on how I felt it to have improved with my ownership of the 300h.  So, I really don't know what happened and have to be content with laying the blame on the angle of camber.    To be on the safe side, I now regularly palpate the inner treads from under the wheel-arches and occasionally lay out a cloth and press my cheek to the ground thus supplementing my groping with a visual check.
