Hi, new on here. First time buyer of a 1998 LS400 and wanted to know if anybody had tried to get classic car insurance on here and how much it was?

Posted

.......  I doubt classic car insurance would be available for a 18 year old car but hey, have a go ............

one of the downsides is that one generally cannot get No Claims Protection and another, glass cover isn't usually included

I insure my 1932 Triumph Southern Cross Sports Tourer separately on specific classic car comprehensive cover as the above ............. and it's not a lot less ££££ cost than normal fully comp cover cost on my 1994 Mazda 323f ( below ) !

BUT I insure my other two cars fully comprehensive in the usual way, including the Lexus ( and the Mazda )

Hi Asif and welcome to the LOC, we are a friendly bunch and some of us even know how to pull them to bits and put them back together again, with of course the one bolt and washer left over.

I cant help with your present queries but I'm sure someone will be along ASAP.

We recommend you spend a couple of mins looking over the rules of the LOC, we will be asking questions later

Hi there Asif and welcome.  My Lexus is covered by a classic car policy with RH Insurance.  There's no No Claims Discount and you have to have an additional car covered on a 'normal' policy.  In other words, if your Lexus is your only car you'd have to look elsewhere.  I pay about £250 a year, I think, and for that premium, mileage is limited to 3,000 per year.

What constitutes a 'classic' car to RH seems to be for them to decide.  They also cover my 1999 Honda Accord V6 Coupe for a similar premium.

I've tried over the years to get classic insurance and only managed once with my very first LS400, but even so I only pay £180 fully comp with NCP.  I guess much depends on age and postcode.  Interestingly I've found that the LS430 is a bit cheaper to insure than the 400.

Privilege seem to come up best every time for me when insuring a Lexus, but not for my Volvo for some reason.

Hi Asif and welcome to the Forum.

Like Scribe, I have my two LS400s on a classic car policy with RH Insurance. They are on the same policy as my Armstong Siddeley Sapphire and I pay a similar price for each of them to Scribe although I have 5000 miles on each car.

Your classic car insurance options will probably be better when your car reaches 20 years old. Footman James have given me a competitive quote for a classic car policy for my 1996 LS400 (less than £180 for 5000 miles) and this is significantly cheaper than what I am currently paying. However, they cannot offer a classic car policy this year for my 1997 car, as it is not yet 20 years old, but they will be able to do next year.

20 years old seems to be the cut-off. Only 2 years to wait! Fully comp mine was £280, if I remember correctly ...... but do not hold me to it!

Adrian Flux insured my 1993 LS400 on a classic policy and that was a few years ago. Only downside to using a classic car policy is that if you insure it on a classic policy you will lose any no claims bonus you have already built up and when you go to insure another 'non classic' car later you will have Zero no claims bonus and have to start all over again and that can prove expensive.

I’ve had my 1996 LS400 since late 2014 and until this May it was with RH. However, they did charge more for it than the other ‘classics’ I had with them (and would have done this year, even though it had reached 20 years old).

I’m now with Footman James and it’s one of four older cars I have with them on an unlimited mileage, multicar classic policy which comes to about £350/yr (without breakdown cover). I can use it for commuting and work visits too.

Sorry, my premium is £190, not £250.  The Honda costs more, for some reason, despite being worth less and slower.

Hi,

Please feel free to give us a try for insurance if you like. If you wanted to PM me some contact details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.

Regards,

Dan.

I had a quote from Saga and it was very competitive when seen against my recent quote with Insurers I've used for some years.  However trying to get European Breakdown Cover on a car of its age was almost impossible which is why I negotiated a slightly better deal and stayed put The European and UK Breakdown Cover was restricted to this particular insurer I believe.  No names,  but if you want breakdown cover for Europe bear that in mind.

....  my Nationwide FlexPlus current account covers european wide breakdown cover too !
