Hi, Can't seem to find this anywhere but what's the opinion of the factory fitted rear DVDs screens in this vehicle as the optional extra? Anyone got these or had them in their car? They seem a very odd design protruding from the seat back and are not very discreet.

Sorry, I can't even find an image of them to attach to show which ones I mean.

Thanks.

Not many people have them fitted - dont really know why you would want to TBH.

Just another method of getting children to throw up in the back seat. The idea is, they'll be oblivious to their surroundings whilst the semicircular canals and utricle (detects horizontal acceleration) in your ear are going crazy as they know you're moving, yet the eyes are on the screens. Will eventually end up giving anyone motion sickness.

That's a generalisation. I can't go 5 minutes as a passenger in a car reading or watching a screen without feeling terrible. My wife & daughter however will happily go long journeys glued to their tablets or kindle without any side-effects. However I agree as an optional extra they're probably a waste of money. When I was car hunting earlier in the year I started out only looking for SE-Ls because of the rear screens but after seeing a few I realised the screens were poor quality in comparison to most portable DVD players or tablets and unless the journey is shorter than the film being played it's going to be next to impossible to change disc on the go. 10+ years ago they may have been cutting-edge ICE tech but today they're a bit out-dated.

Hi all, my first post. Like Assa1974 I too was only looking at SELs,  just for the dvd screens. Then I got put off by the ones that stick out of the seat back, as I thought they'd be a magnet for thieves (at least with the ones integrated in the headrest it's less of a security concern, but I didn't like the idea of the actual player (where you insert the disc) being under the seat, and I want sure if you could watch different movies on different screens), and then I read in this forum that neither type were particularly good (as far as being cutting edge).

I'm (hopefully) about to pick up my first lex on Saturday, it's an SE, and I'll be using the dvd players we used in my previous car, which I will have to attach to the headrest poles each time we go on a long journey.

It's a bit of a pain (each one takes a whole minute to set up, half a minute to put away), but at least I don't have the security concerns, plus the screens are good quality, independent (but can be linked), and can also play media from SD cards and usb drives as well as dvd. And I can change them in a few years if I need to.

Strangely enough, the reason I brought the dvd players was because my 2 kids both complained of being car sick on long journeys. Since using the dvd players, my boy doesn't complain any more, but my girl says she gets even more car sick! Can't win!

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the opinions. Didn't realise that they would be so low tech for a Lexus. Probably not worth having for an extra premium. Cheers.

Another thing I realised is that if you're looking at a car with screens in the back chances are they were bought by a family with kids who were going to spend a reasonable amount of time in the back and the state of the trim & seats are going to be possibly a little less good as a result.

Excellent point, thanks very much.

Just been to check mine. They can't be seen from outside unless you shade your eyes and press your nose to the darkened glass. They are part of the rear seat and cannot be removed so unlikely to be stolen.

Can't comment on screen quality as I've never used them.

Agreed but Id be more worried about someone actually trying and ruining the whole seat as a result. Oh and as always, dont forget to tell your insurance company (optional extras are now requested by most insurance companies)
