Hi guys. Bit of help please. Have a 2009 is220d. 147k miles. For some reason it keep blowing thick white smoke before heating up from the exhaust. For around a minute or two then goes away. However now it won't just do it before heating up but after it heats too. The smoke also smells pretty bad too. It's just recently been fully serviced and also had a new egr valve.

Any help much appreciated. Thanks

White smoke is fuel (diesel). The engine is not burning fuel in one or more cylinders. Get immediate attention - possible head gasket failure?

I though that too

However if I jump straight on the motorway or carriageway it doesn't blow white smoke. Its mainly local driving and clears after a minute or so. Any one know any good diesel specialist in London or Essex I could take it to?

Thanks

Possibly early stages of head gasket going - not enough compression to burn fuel when tootling about - at higher revs/more load, pumping action in the cylinders gets compression high enough to burn? - just a theory - but certainly attention required.

Sorry - I'm nowhere near London - I'm sure someone will be along to help in a short while.

JEM in London or Japex in  Herts?

When does the dpf  regenerate? Also could it be the fifth injector or any other injector? As I said it's only for like a minute and stop blowing smoke. Just wish I knew what was wrong with it. It runs amazingly though that's what bothers me.

Also I read about an entended 7 years warranty on the engine? That would not cover me with 147k miles would it? I have no idea who to take it to! Worried itll cost a fortune

I don't think its any of the replies so far. I know you have a diesel but our petrol engines always put out white smoke or more correctly steam especially during cold winter days, its just the build up of condensation within the exhaust system and soon disappears once the car has warmed up.  There is no smell to the cloud coming out of the exhaust and there would have been if a head gasket had gone or was going and the colour of the smoke would have a blue haze to it and stink of  engine death.  If you had a brand new Bentley, Ferrari, Bugatti or Rolls Royce they all do it. Hi Mike.  Thanks for the reply. The smoke does smell. If I'm stable and I have the window open it stinks. Once it's warm it goes. But it's pretty thick and it doesn't just dissappear.

It wastes coolant too. So maybe possible head gasket. However I've been told if it was the head gasket it would blow all the time.

I have exactly the same problem with my IS220SE (2007). Brought it to Lexus service centre, but they couldn't find anything wrong. Just wonder if this is because they don't want to get involved with these cars any more? One of the obvious suggestions I've got there is to get IS 250, but I think my diesel is still a lovely car and got plenty of life in it.

Yeah I must admit I've seen a few is220d's do it. Maybe it's just how the engines are.

May just sell it. Just at the mechanics and he can't find anything wrong with it. It's not even losing coolant. Mistook it for the windscreen wash (I'm new to these cars)

Says to just drive it and deal with it.

If it is definitely a head gasket you would be losing water and if you take the rocker oil fill cap off you will see coffee coloured cream, also if it was a head gasket it would continue and not stop because you have warmed her up. Mike.

Further to what your mechanic says, just enjoy it and don't dwell on it. Its no surprise you're thinking the worst with all the diesel scaremongering about.

As for that lexus extended warranty, lets just say they will simply tell you to f off in their usual surly but very polite way.
