IS200D Reliability opinions

I have been offered a 2010 IS200D at a very reasonable price which I am seriously considering the problem is that there is very little information online regarding its reliability.  I know the 220d's suffered from head gasket and egr problems which should have been rectified with the updated 148 bhp engine but there is no definitive information online.  I have browsed the toyota forums and they seem to think the updated 1AD FTV engine is reliable if a bit noisy which I am not too concerned about.  Also I am aware the gearing is too long but as I will be doing 90% motorway this again does not put me off.  MPG also seems to be very good with 50+ achievable.  I'm hoping someone could shed some light as vehicle is fully loaded and in good condition at a price much better than the equivalent bmw or audi.

I have a 220d 148 model - and all i can say is... Its been perfect! No reliability issues to report here :)

I have owned nearly 2years, travelled over 20k miles in my ownership and it is still going strong.

I mainly do motorway miles and 6th gear really only 80+

mpg I see more closer to 40-45

Well mine is 220d with 177bhp, from personal experience highly recommend! I cant find a real reason to sell lol

Sounds ideal for what you are doing.

Mine is also an earlier 177hp one, but it has been great.  I managed 41mpg for my last tank, but that was with more town driving then usual.

The head gasket problem shouldn't be an issue, and I was told they drive a bit better because of reduced turbo lag.

EGR's and DPF's won't cause any grief since you are doing lots of motorway miles.

Similarly, on the motorway, the car is quiet and the mid range torque makes overtaking very easy.  Combine that with good fuel economy, and it will be a very good mile muncher

Well it is quite simple - 2005-2010 cars had 177hp and were marketed as IS220d, the face-lift models 2010+ had some reliability issues addressed and the power were reduced to 148hp, as well that helped to me pollution targets. Now IS220d is already sluggish car I won't enjoy driving, IS200d is even worse. True it is more reliable, but nowhere near perfect.

Generally, people have issues with these cars when doing short trips/ city driving. For motorway driving they are fine (ish). Still wouldn't recommend it. Obviously, it is hard to judge without the price, mileage etc. Maybe it is really dirty cheap.. and if you don't mind obvious shortcomings of the model then why not?

If you discount the EGR, DPF issues that almost all modern diesels suffer from, then it is quite on par with other brands in terms of reliability.  Probably even better than most.  Yes, it had an issue with head gaskets that has been mostly resolved now, but then again, a lot of other manufacturers have design flaws too.

Also, the 220d is not sluggish.  Well, perhaps compared to a Ferrari it is, but not when considered against anything comparable.

You are right. Sorry, I must mention - I compare it with IS250 which is by far not the fastest car around, still huge difference. And again you right, comparable car would be sluggish as well e.g. BMW e91 320d manual with the same 177hp is exactly the same. 

To clarify. It is not sluggish when compared with similar cars, but it is generally sluggish car. Huge part of it is that it is Turbo diesel - meaning until turbo spins at ~2k RPM you have maybe half of you horses... that eventually turns into driving like crazy, Hitting gas pedal always hard, because you always feel that lack of power on low RPM etc. This completely doesn't suite the car character. This is not limited to Lexus IS220/200, but rather to any "small" engine turbo diesel car.

I think all the is250 v is220D comparisons are mentioned because they look identical, so all the merits are between these two marques alone.

I would never entertain the thought of driving a diesel after being in a 250 for so long, if you do mainly motorway driving the petrol is almost as economical as the diesel anyway.

After driving is250, no diesels for me anymore, don't know what been missing, even wife luvs it now. Diesel are not bad cars but  only good if ur gonna do huge miles @ motorway miles. Old diesel cars were much better as didn't have dpf, Iav had 3 mercs which were diesel and were great,as used to do 30k per yr,had no problems with them,new diesels will give a miss as sort of private miles I do now it's not worth it, apart from my London taxi tx1 Nissan 2.7 which is a work horse and it's done 400k still going strong.
