ok alway love a lexus has 2 is200 but alway wanted   lexus ls460, so seem one for sale 2006 sel model

the vgrs ligth on- iv read it cost 5k to fix by dealer for steering rack. but as anyone had this fix much cheaperand how much. maybe had it recondition or somthing or even got it fix. iv read the dealer have done a recall on 2009  model no chance to get it done on a 2006 model. 

2- are they any lexus specialist close to rochdale. so looking at oldham bury manchester. close by for service ect

Hi Jawad and welcome to the LOC, we are a friendly bunch and some of us even know how to pull them to bits and put them back together again, with of course the one bolt and washer left over.

I cant help with your present queries but I'm sure someone will be along ASAP.

We recommend you spend a couple of mins looking over the rules of the LOC, we will be asking questions later

Hi Jawad,

There aren't many of us with 460's but, as Mike says, we will always try to help.

You might like to check out the US Lexus forum.....there are a lot more 460's over there and they seem to have experience of most of the problems.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread!  VGRS light does not necessarily mean a new steering rack.  My 460 (acquired Oct '15) has always had a 10 degree steering offset.  So I set about resolving the issue.  With Toyota Techstream and an OBD dongle from eBay I managed to centre the steering without touching a spanner.  Now... a little more info.  My car has been involved in a minor front end at some point, evidenced by Lexus history notes and a quote to repair.  I suspect owner took it to an Indy (not repaired by Lexus according to the invoices I have) who appears to have made a decent job of the repair, but couldn't figure out the steering issues.  Apparently, whenever the car detects a calibration change (like removing/refitting/replacing) in a steering component, it sets the steering to a 10 degree offset to remind you to get it recalibrated.  Until then I believe the VGRS system is inoperative but in my case there was no warning light.

After clearing an old trouble code relating to the ABS system (my pedal is soft and I suspect it needs new fluid and a bleed - which is on my list of things to do), I got the VGRS warning.  I then started the steering angle calibration and after that process was complete I not only had a straight steering wheel, but I had no warning lights.  No dirty hands, no spanners, no scraped knuckles :D

Having said that, it is possible you have a serious problem with the rack... your mileage may vary.  But I picked up a 27k miles 2006 car for a steal because the indy that had it wanted rid and I think was a touch afraid of the complexity and the known issue (steering wheel offset).

A couple of weeks ago I returned to my 460 after shopping in a supermarket. When I started the engine I had a Master Warning light, two messages on the display - Check VGSR and Check VSC - and the steering wheel was offset at 45 degrees. The car had been perfect up till then. For the uninitiated; VGSR is Variable Geometry Steering Ratio and VSC is Vehicle Stability Control. I had read about this problem on the US forum and there, they were quoting about $5000 to change the steering rack, including labour.

I took the car to my local Lexus garage in The Hague. I know the service manager very well and they have been looking after me since my LS400 days. They took the car in and plugged in the diagnostics. Amongst the possible problems was a failed steering rack but the service guys refused to believe that - they are old-style engineers and like to use logic. They decided to do a complete diagnostic test of ALL the electronics.

Would you believe that the problem was in the 'Park Assist' module. It had gone out of limits. They did a complete reset of ALL the electronics and a realignment of the front and back wheels.  The car has been perfect since.

Oh, the cost?............260 euros.    A good garage is worth its weight in gold :yes:

Always knew Citroen 2CVs were easier to own! No such complexities!

Amazed to read that you can set Steering electronically! (And mess it up equally, it seems!)

It's this kind of electronic gremlin afflicting a Lexus that alarms me regarding the later model cars. It's the kind of potentially expensive fault you expect to see occurring on the likes of later BMW's and Mercs. And I wouldn't touch one of them with a barge-pole, for that reason. To be both technologically advanced and extremely reliable in the long term is a tough nut for any car maker to crack.

I do tend to agree with you. The problem is that ALL cars are now stuffed full of gadgets......I think that it's imperative to find a garage where the guys are real technicians - not just component changers.

I have to say that my 460 has been faultless up till this electronic glitch.
