The back lighting on the instrument cluster has gone very dim on my 2001 gs430. I have done loads of searches and from what i have found it looks like the c212 capacitor on the circuit board is at fault, I have ordered a replacement capacitor , In the mean time because I use the car on a daily basis I thought a stopgap would be to put in a second hand cluster . my question is would a gen 2 gs 300 cluster be compatable ? I ask because of the rev counter ( presuming it works by impulses and one being a straight six and the other being a v8 smile.gif

I wouldn't change the cluster if I were you. I don't know if Lexus have the same idea as BMW but I was going to do the same with my BMW but members of the BMW forum said No, No, No.

Apparently mileage is recorded in several places throughout the vehicle and unless they all tally, the mileage tamper indicator will activate. This condition will remain of course because there will be a mismatch between the cluster and the rest of the car by the amount of mileage you did during the swap.

Thanks for that John , I knew a lot of european cars have the cluster coded to the ecu , I  was just wondering if anybody knew if Jap cars followed the same route.
