Haven't Bought A Lexus Yet, But Thinking About It

Hello all,

This is my first post, as I have not yet even owned a Lexus, but I'm seriously thinking about buying a second hand one for around about £5K to do me for a couple of years.

I thought that, before I go ahead an buy, that it would be a good idea to ask people who own these cars, what they think of them.

I'm thinking about buying an IS220D SE

First of all, taking this one as an example, is it a good price for the spec, age, mileage on the clock?

What price point should I be looking at for an example such as this?

Do these cars typically run well at this age/mileage?

Are they likely to need any work done in the short to medium term?

Is there anything inherent, issue wise, with this model of Lexus that I should be looking out for when I go to view the car?

After a certain mileage, should they have had their cambelt changed for example?

How much am I likely to pay for the following:-

• Tyres
• brake pads
• Brake Disks
• SERVICING???

Sorry for the barrage of questions, I'm literally pretty clueless about the brand, apart from the fact that think they're well-built and relatively luxurious.

It's going to be a second car, for getting me to work and back really.

I live about 7 miles away from work. I need to drive through the city with a little motorway part in between, it can take between 20 and 45 minutes to do the journey depending on the traffic.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Welcome to the forum.

I suspect you'll get a lot of negative posts, as the diesel has had many problems.

If you want to avoid waiting, just do a search, there are a LOT of threads to wade through.

Or am I barking up the wrong automotive tree with a Lexus at this price point (I suspect I could be)?

From all the posts I have read, I would avoid the diesel. For your short journey to work a petrol Lexus would not be too expensive in fuel. Test drive both variants but the petrol one will more than likely be less problematic in the long term.

Others on the forum may disagree. If it is going to be your second car, just for work, then you are going to travel a maximum of 100 miles a week. On that basis I would consider an LS - you would not be disappointed.

Hello Spacewagon52,

Thanks for the recommendation, might look more into those.

The only thing with them is that I think they're a bit too big for what I require, also the relatively massive engines in them are probably a bit overkill for me who wouldn't be doing much in the way of motorway driving from day to day.

But, oh God are they luxurious, spacious and I'm sure a dream to drive!

Hi welcome to loc I got is220d se-l 2006 with 93k as long it's got fsh shouldn't b a problem I had mine for 2yrs with only dpf cleaned, I cleaned egr myself, front calipers replaced passed mot every time 1St time but is220d is not meant for local driving what u intend to use it for best off getting is250 se-l with plenty extra toys and miles u gonna do will block dpf I'm in process of selling mine will b getting is250 as do all local miles, mine ok as use shell v power diesel and take it on motorway once a week hope this helps

I think just avoiding the diesels would be a good start, and, with the usual care, I'm sure there are plenty of nice cars available within your budget.

If u goona use for town driving Toyota aygo will b better as cheap tax,good on fuel with ur budget get low miles one
