What Years Of The Ls400 Are Drive-By-Wire?

1997 and earlier is linkage throttle

1998 onwards is electronic - basically the mark 4 and onwards

the electronics make the throttle very responsive and make the car feel light

That is interesting, as the throttle response on my MkIV is much sharper than my old MkIII. Setting off, you need to be very gentle with the pedal, otherwise it feels like you are accelerating too quickly.

Thank you, this answers my question perfectly.

Generally I have always been rather skeptical about electronic throttle controls on cars, because of how it may introduce a new component for failure.

Has it been known for these to ever fail for anybody?

Edit: And if it fails, how much do the replacement parts cost?

well in 8 years of driving the LS range i have never heard of any failure

I've found the electronic throttle on the Mk4 to be very sensitive. It does take a gentle right foot so as not to spin the rear wheels if the road is a bit damp. You can take off like a scalded cat if your're not careful. I did have one other sort of 'scare' with the electronics and that was on one occasion when starting up; the engine revs went ballistic without me touching the throttle (and 'no', it wasn't the floor mat). Only happened the once and has never happened since. I put it down to some 'rogue' radio signal interferance. Bit disconcerting though.

I imagined so, Surely an electronic pedal wouldn't ruin lexus's good track record for reliability. I am highly considering buying myself an LS400, which generation would you reccomend? Mechanical linkage or the newer electrical ones?
