Worst car was an Austin Princess (Wedge Shape) in demob-suit beige. In the 9 months I had it, it needed a new starter motor, new alternator, new steering rack, new radiator, packing-pieces in the rear suspension to stop the back wheels towing-in, the auto gearbox out to stop lurching between gears and new hydogas suspension when it failed going round Hyde Park Corner.

British Leyland, who took the hit on the warranty costs, rang me up to ask if the radio was working OK. I said it was and they suggested that I jack the radio up and drive a new car under it.

I went to Cowley to watch the Princesses being made and when I saw their quality procedures, I was scared ****less to drive mine back along the A40. Hard to beileve that this is the same factory now turning out something as tasty as the new Mini.

When I first arrived in the UK, my girlfriend (now wife) had been given an Allegro (aggro).

I won't list all the problems (including three breakdowns on one trip) but the best was the funny rattling noise it used to make when decelerating / backing off on the accelerator. I couldn't find it myself so took it to the local mechanic:

It'll be the valve seats rattling up & down with the valves. I'll drill some holes and pop in some self tappers to stop them moving!

Car was nearly knackered anyway so I said 'go ahead' - problem solved.

B :tsktsk: y thing was always breaking down. I've never touched a British built car since, although I accept this is a bit unfair (used to be a fan, had an XJ6 in Australia for 4 years before coming here).

Very first car I had (and won't admit to anywhere else ) was my uncles old Marina .

What an awful car that was. I had it for about 6 months and in that time took it to one garage or another nearly every other week. The major probably was the leaks. It let in water in the foot well, behind the glove box, sills, etc. One of the garages that I took it to said that it was common and asked I why did I think it was called a **** Marina :P

After that was a Renault Laguna. Loved the car but the drive shafts went, head gasket went, air con went, windows stuck and even the drivers seat broke in half when I was going home one evening.
