Mark Levinson Dvd/sacd/dvd Audio Discs! -confirmation-

Hi all,

Collecting a 14 plate 250 F Sport this weekend and it has Premium Nav with ML audio fitted (this will be my 3rd IS). I have been looking into the specs on the ML system and I am unable to find much. There is a section on the ML website: http://www.marklevinson.com/mark-levinson-in-lexus.html

I was hoping to be able to do the following:

• Play DVD audio discs
• Play SACD disc (Super audio CDs)
• Play a music DVD's that has 5.1 audio - (I am aware that ....correct me if I'm wrong ....you can play and watch a DVD when parked, as soon as you select a gear the screen will go blank but the audio still plays.

Can anyone confirm this?

The premium nav manual specifically states that DVD audio and SACD discs are not supported. The manual doesn't mention ML so maybe those things are supported.

The parking brake has to be applied for the DVD picture to show.

The series II and series III IS use completely different audio systems so even if it is supported it wouldn't confirm things for you.

When I was sold my 300h a couple of weeks ago to replace a 250 sel I was also told the wrong info, after investigation it turns out that the ML system in the 2013 300h has only a single loading CD drive, if you want movies then these can be played from a memory stick but only if you have a fairly recent verson of the firmware installed on the system.

The movie has to be a .avi

The video from the movie will only display if you have the parking brake on and are not moving.

My premium nav will play DVD movies, my car is a 2013.

in response to Ben........ I spent 3 months looking for a 13 onwards IS250 and did a lot of research, I got a lot of contradicting info from a range of dealerships.

Most of them said "it has no DVD player in the premium nav"

Have you tried loading a disc with the handbrake on?

Many audio makers have stopped supporting DVD-A high res audio, because nobody makes the discs any more. although I think the discs may still play after a fashion at lower resolution . I think that is true even of Meridian Audio, who were heavily involved in designing the format so it would not be surprising if it ceases to be playable in cars etc. As Meridian guru Bob Stuart once said, "in the format war between DVD audio and SACD... the iPod won"

At home, my Oppo BDP-103 disc player still supports DVD audio, as well as CD, SACD , DVD video and Blu-ray, which is just as well as some of the old DVD audio discs appear to command high prices second hand.

Modern in-car systems hould perhaps start to support blu-ray, although the sonic benefits are largely lost with even a slight background of road noise.

MY13+ IS 300h with Premium Nav + ML unit support DVD and A for picture and audio playback but the picture drops out when you select anything other than "park" foot brake on.

SACD is not supported in any Lexus unit.

On a side note Blu-Ray is supported in the MY14 LS 600h ;)

Some DVDs audio discs work and some don't, any idea why? The ones that don't will play the first 10 seconds and will then repeat the same 10 seconds.

The ones that do sound incredibly crisp.

I've not had much experience with DVD-A disc but would be happy to check for you.

Could you tell me if there are any obvious differences between the disc's?

Things like:-

Region

Manufacture/Studio release

Single layer or multi layer etc..

More you can tell me the better.

Info on discs:

Working: Rush 2112 region 0, 5.1 has a video storyboard (like Scs)

Not working: Metallica black album DVD audio

The Doors LA Woman DVD audio

Both are Audio only .....no Dvd video and are not regioned
