I have been hearing a lot recently about so called "honour killings" in the Asian community, of which there are quite a few.

As far as my limited understanding goes (and I hope to corrected), this is where a person (normally female) is murdered by a member of a family over a real or perceived insult.

If this is acceptable practice in certain Asian cultures, should we learn to accept this as a cultural difference (as in so many other areas), or they wrong? Or does it depend on the cirecumstances?

I'd love to hear some honest views from British Asians.

It's bloody scary, that's what it is.

But I have to add this - to that man who killed his own daughter because she didn't want to go into an arranged marriage and also because she adopted the western ways - what did you expect when you moved over here?

I'm chinese and my parents moved over here with my grandparents when they were very young, however I'm 28 now and have never had my religion (Bhuddism) forced on me. Because when I was growing up, I was made aware of all the other religions around me, I grew to understand and accept everyone for who they are.

Honour killings come from bringing shame to one's family by doing something that contradicts their way of life and/or beliefs. That young girl was killed for simply choosing her western way of life over her father's.

If 1st generation parents do not want their children to adopt these ways, then they can do one simple thing. Not move to the West in the first place.

Here Here well said.. People who come to live in this counrty are soon very critical of the country they decided to live in. If the country is that bad then why stay there and if you dont like the religion or ways of that country then do not live in it...

Please do not get me wrong.. I am not In any way racialist..

But why can they not go home.. ?? Because they a frightened about going home due to dictators or war or poverty if this is so then surely if they are in this country (where to them they are better off than their homeland) they should not moan and be gratefull and they should respect our laws like we respect theirs when and if we visit there country..Laws in this country are set for a reason

even if we do not like them they are there to prevent us from becoming an inhuman society .

I think the one extreme case we all know about was that cleric Abu Hamza who preached openly about making the West pay for crimes against Muslims by inciting racial hatred, yet he and his family live here getting hundreds of thousands of pounds in handouts from the taxpayer.

I'm from an ethnic minority but even I know that what he's doing is not on.

Anyway, we're veering slightly off topic here!

I think that Honour Killings is just another name for a murder.

I think people who do this sort of thing should be Punished.

I am a British Muslim, Born and Bred in South London and still here.

Never heard of anything Like that being told to me by my parents.

Always been told Love thy Neighbour and his/her car :)

On a serious note, its totally wrong and people like that give the asian community in this country a bad name.

You should abide by the laws in the country you live in.

Also, these are isolated cases and of the minority who maybe believe this, however its not right and should be dealt with accordingly.

Hope this helps

I'm with you Jac,

I'm from Luton, we have more than our fair share here! So many of them do not want to adopt our way of life. Can be very frustrating.

From all over the globe people make a bee line for the UK,just think how many

countries they pass to get here.......why?

Because we treat those better than our own citizens at times....we should adopt the

same process of wanting to live here as they do in Brunei, you must speak the language

fluently and knows its history, beliefs, polotics and so on and they should at least come

with some of thier own money rather than live of state benefits.

here here! totaly agree. This country is becoming a port/hotel for the worlds unwanted. i am a young person and i am not eligible for a councel house because i already have a home (parents). yet i pay taxes etc. i abide by the law etc. but if i come over here via iligal means or asylum then i am entitled to a house money etc and am allowed to a degree to bring my own countries laws and religion with me. if this is the case im sure us brits should be allowed to adopt laws from other countries that we think would beniifit us??? mainly eu laws or strange bylaws. but alas we cant.

as for the Honour killings, well taking another persons life is murder no matter what the provocation is. im fed up of people hiding behind religion, one must be responsible for his own actions and not just that of a writen word.

My feelings are as follows:

I have no problem with legal immigrants, after all, without them we certainley would have a shortage of doctors etc..

I have no problem with genuine Asluym seekers, people who are in serious danger of death in their own country. But IMO, the EU as a whole should deal with this, each country taking a fair share. (unlike france piling them onto us!).

My concerns are, illegal immigrants/aslyum seekers, who manage to get into, and stay in our country. The goverment seems to be unable to control it.

I have nothing against other cultures in our country, as long as they respect the law, and in the case above, my personal feeling (and apologies if it causes any offence), is that the person concerned was 'attempting' to use his religon as an excuse, when in fact, I am pretty sure, the leaders of his religon/culture would share the same opinion as we do..

I wonder what everyones veiw is on council houses .When i wanted my first house i to was told to buy one as council houses were not for people like me, i.e i had a job and a stable home life (not much money but stable). Most people that i knew at the time that were given council houses were single parents druggies ,theives, and low lifes that had no jobs and whose parents were on the dole and had no morales on bringing up children at all.seems to me that i have paid a mortagauge on my house for 15 years and managed to get a resonable house ,but it has been a struggle with negative equity house prices crashing etc etc.were as these council tenants that ponced for most of there lives and paid minimal rent have now bought these houses at ridiculous prices and can sell them and afford to move in next to me with no money owing on there home at all .the worst thing is i have been paying into a system to support them.I will add though that i am not stating that all council tennants fit into this mould and some deserve to be able to buy there houses as they have lived in them for many years and paid for them time over.it just seems that some were given these houses at there time of need to help them get on there feet ,but it turns out they were better of that us mortgauge paying people .strange system  that gives houses to people that needs them then lets them sell them at massive profits which then stops othr people that need them having a home
