Ours will never go back to a Lexus dealer for as long as we own it. I've used the same mechanic for all my cars for the last 10 years. I trust him far more than any main dealer from any brand. He charges me £90 for an oil change, and uses OEM parts. So that's whom I'll be using.

I'd make sure he will be using 0w-20 oil for that price, that grade is quite expensive.

Yup I think 5l of Castrol is £60

How much oil is required?

Toyota OEM branded 0w-20 can be had online for £40 per 5L

The chap I use knew about the oil requirements before I told him about it :)

Call me penny pinching but when it comes to car servicing I rather just pay for the man who does the job, not the fancy show room, receptionist, 'free' coffee etc....Same reason why I shop at Aldi and ASDA rather Waitorse, which is where most our friends seem to go :)

I agree, and if you are keeping your car for many years it makes sense. If however you were to replace it after only two or three years then it wouldn't make financial sense as the drop in value, due to the lack of FLSH, would be greater than the saving made of cheaper servicing.

The biggest issue with independents is they are so localised. Many are excellent but as a purchaser of a used vehicle I wouldn't know if they are good or not. I personally wouldn't purchase a Lexus under 5 years old without FLSH.

Yes Colin, I'd not buy without a full main dealer history either.

Just had the Honda Jazz MOT'd by Honda, 9yr old and 116k and it sailed through. It has been the same main dealer serviced since new, with no issues under service plans.

Although this could be construed to be a testament to the car's build quality perhaps more that the servicing. But my Son will get it on Tuesday as his commute car, to save on his car mileage, can see it going to 200k.

The problem with Waitrose is - every time I've been ive noticed no difference in quality of goods compared to Asda/Tesco or Lidl.

My Mercedes regularly goes to the independent - Im not paying £500 a service for a car worth £3k!

However, I have noticed that every time I get the Merc serviced, the seats are grubby, the carpets are grubby (they're grey!) and even if I put plastic on the floor and seats beforehand, they manage to get their fingers everywhere else!

Not to mention the scratches on the wheels when changing tyres and inevitable corrosion on crap Merc wheels afterwards. Always manage to get scratches near the bonnet too! There are 3 recommended independents near me but Ive been to them all and can't see why people go there - you just get your "pristine" car dirty - the damn oil doesn't come out of the carpets now!

On a side note - Lexus quoted me £750 for 2 majors and a minor on an IS300h and 2 MOT's included. That works out £250 each year including the hybrid healthcheck and wash and vac - no extra bits

The cheapest ive got for 3 services around here by an independent is £500. Id rather just have the full Lexus services done for £250 extra (minus MOT cost)- works out only £100 more a year and it'll go in expenses anyway.

Quite agree about service history and selling when not that old. But if I thought we would sell the Lexus after only a few years of ownership we wouldnt have bought new....We still might depending on how our other car plans go, but since we had to wait 5 months for the IS to be delivered, and its in the exact colour/spec we wanted (which we couldn't find used) I doubt we'll let it go for a long while yet.

Though at the moment its not getting much use, but at least it looks pretty on the drive :)

Rayaan, your comment about grubby fingerprints is the reason I will probably not be returning to Lexus, I resent paying double for a shoddy service, given that I will probably need two services a year, I resent paying an extra £300pa over a good specialist.

Your dealers probably ******* then, Ive always collected a very very clean car. Even the engine bay gets wiped down well
