i am looking at getting a wireless charging system for my phone to use in the car and wondered if anyone knew how much power you can take from a usb socket

i am looking at the following items

the 1st tem takes 10watts / 2a

the 2nd item takes 5watts / 1a

is this taking too much from the socket ?? if it is i will have to use the power socket in under the arm rest instead using a convertor

You cannot take more power from the socket than the socket can provide.

Those eBay figures are very, very inexact - the actual current drawn could easily be out by 50% or more (I have measured the current draw for a number of Qi chargers using a USB ammeter).

I also think that you'll be lucky to use those sorts of charging pads in a car - the registration between the coils in the phone and in the charger needs to be fairly exact (even with 3-coil chargers), and the vibrations in a running car - even a Lexus! - would be enough to dislodge the phone.

usb ports are only 0.5A std output. You'll need to use a suitable convertor in the 12v socket.

I have just looked at the spec's of the charging 'pad' you are using - 'interesting' that the dimensions are the same as the cut out in the centre console of the IS (also perfect for my Galaxy S4 mini) - so 'interesting' in fact that I would have thought that is exactly what it was designed for!

thanks for your replys,i have bought just 2 units one for at work and one for home and i am going to experiment with one of them to see if i can get the phone to stay on the charging plate so it can be used in the car,if it can great if not it doesn't matter.

I've played with QI chargers and in the best Blue Peter fashion made one for my IS with a £3 QI pad from eBay, a bit of foam, a plant pot, and a velvet bag that came with some sunglasses.

I had to use a separate USB charger to get the necessary current. It all works. Getting the QI pad to align with the phone was a matter of trial and error and once the foam is cut right it works well. One issue I do have is catching the buttons on on the side of the phone - I've got loads of photos of the passenger seat.

Some may snigger but I reckon it looks OK - even in an IS cabin.

If you are confident with getting into the center console and wiring, then I recommend using something like this.

I used one to hard wire my dash cam and active phone mount. Wires completely hidden away and still have USB and power sockets free.

I created a post a while ago of how to remove the center console as I fitted after market headrests for the kids.
