I have front and rear dashcams fitted to my IS.

I was on my way home yesterday from a weekend away and an incident occurred which has been caught on both cameras and is crystal clear.

I had been driving in a line of traffic for about 15 miles or so and there was a chap behind me in a Ford. There are not many opportunities to overtake on this particular road and, because of this the line of traffic remained constant over most of this distance, with just the odd car turning off the main road now and again. We then approached a set of traffic lights at a four-way non-bollarded junction. There were only four cars in front of me as we approached the lights, The first two were making a right turn, which they eventually did and, the second two were going straight on. The car immediately in front of me was about half way over the junction as the lights changed to amber and then red. I had stopped at the white line with the lights on red but, the chap behind simply pulled out from behind me and went across the red light.

This to me was very dangerous and was at the very least 'driving without due care and attention'

Is this worth reporting or would I be wasting my time. It is people like this who cause many accidents and I feel that their poor driving abilities should be brought to their attention and that these things don't go unnoticed.

I have saved the files to my pc so that they don't get overwitten.

EDIT - Just looking at the video again, he/she started the overtaking manoeuvre whilst still within the zig-zag lines, another offence!!

If the image is clear I would definitely report it. I've got a dash cam, and if I witnessed anything like that I would report it straight away.

ok, I don't live in your neck of the woods, but I would definitely report it. I have a 2ch Blackvue and I would. It is not snitching, it is purely a question of safety.

Its like reporting any criime. Regardless of what the Police will do about it should be reported. There is guy who posts bad driving on you tube and many of the drivers featured have been given a caution and I think a few porosecuted. Can you clearly see the reg number?

Hi Edward, yes everything is absolutely crystal clear. I thought about posting it up on here but I'm not sure if that would be the right thing to do.

Anyone have any ideas where I should report it to, do I just contact the local police station?

Posted

Local police I would imagine, and sooner rather than later.

all I would say is if you do decide to report it make sure your prepared to attend court as a witness. if you are then go for it.

Well, because it was such a diabolically outrageous demostration of how not to drive, I have taken the bull by the horns and have reported the incident.

Apparently PC49 will be round at some point to collect the evidence.

I will report back with the outcome.

Edit.........Blimey, the police have just called me and will be with me at 2pm today.

Glad to hear they are actively following it up.

I may also look into investing in a dash cam, what are the popular devices. Given that a navigation device with one would be pretty surplus for me?

I'd never thought of them before for evidence of bad driving before. It would certainly improve my mood, knowing I've caught said idiot on film.

I bought a DrivePro 200 for £85, it was the top buy according to Auto Express, it comes with a 16GB card.

Just to show how useful they can be, this is me a few weeks ago coming close to removing someones door!

For some reason they always look like you're speeding!

What can I say other than "I am absolutely amazed and disgusted"

The police have got back to me this morning and they have advised me that the car in question is a hire car from a company in Leicester and as such, they will not be contacting them to get the name and address of the driver. They do not think that the firm will be forthcoming with the required information anyway. I personally think that they should be forced to provide such information.

It is of course possible that the person concerned (the offending driver) could well have given false information as to his/her identity from the outset and so any investigative work on the part of the police would have been wasted.

What annoys me most is the fact that this person may well be driving like this on a regular basis and, it will be only when he is involved in a collision or accident of some sort, that he will be brought to book.

I really was hoping that at the very least, the police would have knocked his door and gave him a shock by saying that his driving technique leaves a lot to be desired and that they would be watching out for any future incidents involving him/her.

The only good thing to come out of this is that the police commented on how good my camera/s are!

That rubbish!! What would they do if he had triggered a speed camera and earned 3 poimts and a fine? They would have found out who the driver was then no doubt.

If you really want to make a point Geoff, then write to the Chief Constable with a copy to your M.P. expressing your views and if you do not receive what you consider to be an appropriate response, then write to the Editor of your local paper enclosing copies of all correspondence to date. The pigeons will be very upset by your cat!

All too often the typical response from the police is just what you have experienced. My last company car (a 120D Sport) was only 3 months old when the perhaps 'financially priveleged' 18 year old son of a local resident and motor factor owner was texting a message in his Fiesta. Problem was that he was driving at the time - and he drove head first in to my BMW whilst parked outside our house.. Three months later and £12K worth of repairs and £10K's worth of hire car it was returned. I always remember the PCSO's words "oh, we don't usually persue these cases unless there is a serious injury - and most importantly the driver was insured". What PCSO Plod didn't know that that the young driver in question was driving on his fathers company commercial insurance. He was 18. The minimum age with this insurer was 21 years old!

A few year previous to this a local Subaru driver let his friend drive the car. He lost control at 80 mph+ (this is a residential 30 limit) and spun off the road down the front wall and railing of our property, totally destroying it. The police response was the same i.e "no one was hurt, youre' covered by insurance, we don't need to take any further action"

I would agree with writing to the Chief Constable and MP, perhaps especially your MP. I know MP's don't generally have much of a reputation when it comes to serving their community, but about 3 years ago I contacted my MP regarding an unfair contract I was in with a waste disposal company, the Federation of Small Businesses legal staff were next to useless, My MP got me out of the contract within days, with over £1,000 of alleged debt cancelled, so they can work for you. Easy enough to email your MP, and maybe ask him/her to contact the Chief Constable.

I agree with all the above but getting hold of these Police commissioners/Marshall that were voted into their high paying jobs about 18 months ago will also be worth kicking into gear, sorry cant remember their job title. Mike.

I reported an incident earlier this week to the police a glass bottle was thrown from the vehicle in front of me,shattered as it hit the pavement and then sprayed the front of my car with glass shards.

I was given a "crime number" and later contacted by a police officer assigned to my case, who was in court the next day then on nights but promised to come back to me asap, this has all been confirmed by email.

Time will tell.

Before our nearest police station closed completely to the public it used to close for lunch, always made me smile that did. "hello police, there's a man being mugged outside your entrance" "I'm sorry we're all out for lunch can you call back later"

Hi,

Just to let you know that a number of our insurance schemes offer discounts for a wide range of in-car cameras.

Am I alone in being concerned that the "surveillance society" is now creeping to private citizens, with dashcams joining CCTV in recording everything that we do. Perhaps we should all re-read 1984 to remind ourselves where that path can lead to.

(I'm not condoning somebody jumping a red light, and I haven't seen the footage or know the junction in question, but it may not actually have been an unsafe manouever and/or put anybody in danger ...)

Philip,

We each have responsibilities and we must discharge them sensibly and responsibly. Watch the video if you can.

1984 did not happen as predicted by G.O. and neither will 2025 as sang by Z and E!

John

Zager and Evans actually sang about 2525, so unless you have a time machine, it's a bit difficult to know how prescient they were. And while 1984 didn't happen in 1984 (or in 1948, which was Balir's original title), my whole point is that it is happening in 2015!

We may all have responsibilities - but they don't necessarily involve acting as snitches for the state, especially in cases where nobody and no property was damaged....

My dashcam will only be viewed if I need to use the footage as part of an insurance claim. It loops every 2 hours so nothing is kept. Only criminals & dngerous drivers need worry about any form of cctv imho.
