Hello All,

Recently upgraded from a CT to a GS 250 (i fancied something a little sporting!). Cars been great for the last month and then last week (after a 5 hour motorway trip) the engine now sounds "Tapety". It's particularly noticeable under acceleration at all speeds. Is even worse when cold (but then again most engines are a little rough when cold right? I've filled it with premium unleaded since i got it a litle over 1000 miles ago. Car has 18.5k on the clock and is a 2013 (63) model.

Another thing i have noticed recently is almost a step change in engine performance when accelerating from 30-60 to join a motorway. Not foot to the floor but say 75% when it hits about 4000rpm there is a noticeable surge from the engine...normal?

I'm going to take the car to Lexus when they have a slot to look but would like to know what you guys think? Something to do with timing?

Can you tell i came from a small hybrid :innocent:

Never hear the tapity noise but the power surge at 4000 is normal, just the vvti kicking in

The IS has a tappet noise but apparently this is just noisy injectors which they all have - not that noisy to be concerned about but audible

Thanks for the info. My concern is that this has developed and in my opinion makes the car sound rough/old. I've got a session booked next week with Lexus Edinburgh to review so will report back then.

Vvti doesn't kick in. It's not a honda. It's always "on"

The surge felt is the due to the ACIS (google Toyota ACIS)

Tapping can be caused by non OEM oil filter, wrong grade of oil or could just be loud injectors as said.

A lot of Toyotas/Lexus suffer noisy valve train as they age. Had a few Toyotas/lexus in my time and a lot suffered the "tapping"

I managed to quiten my IS300 down by fitting OEM oil filter and using 10w/40 fully synthetic oil

Thanks for the information all. The more i look into it the more it seems that other owners notice the noise. Apparently its to do with the direct injection system?

I have had 2x IS250 and both made the noise you described and as stated just the injectors. My GS300 didnt but then I guess its just because its a different engine.

The more if listen and investigate myself the more i can see it being the injectors - maybe its not developed and im just becoming more sensitive the noises it makes!

Turn the aircon off then listen, it should be quieter.

I've done all testing with the aircon off up to this point. Surprisingly it makes little or no discernible difference.

Garage visit tomorrow - wholly expecting being told that its normal now after the feedback from all of you guys.

Direct Injection mate, GS250's are pretty much bulletproof.

Is it like a "turbo" surge or a sensation of more power. 4k RPM is pretty close to peak power in the 250, could just be that.

So my worries were unfounded - it is just the noise of direct injection!

Whilst in though there were two other things they picked up on:

- Noisy seat cooling fan, being replaced under warranty!

- Potential need to replace from bumper! Someone left a scuff on the passenger side front bumber (and a light one at that). I asked for a replacement clip but it seems that multiple "internal" clips are broken. Bracing for the worst!

Thanks for all the words of assurance guys :)
